UptimeRobot review: features, pricing and alternatives

Updated: October 2026

Short answer

UptimeRobot is one of the most widely used uptime monitors. It checks websites, servers, ports, keywords, cron jobs (heartbeats), SSL certificates and domain expiry, and alerts by email, SMS, voice, mobile app and many integrations such as Slack, Teams, webhooks and PagerDuty. Its free plan covers 50 monitors at five-minute intervals and one status page and is aimed at hobby and non-profit projects; paid plans (Solo, Team, Scale, Enterprise) add intervals down to 30 or 15 seconds, more status pages, team seats and longer data retention. Strengths: generous free plan, simple setup, many alert channels. Limits: it watches availability, not broken links, indexing, traffic or hack signals. monitordefend covers those per website, with email alerts and no free plan.

  • Best for: low-cost uptime, port, keyword and heartbeat monitoring.
  • Free plan: 50 monitors, 5-minute checks, basic status page.
  • Not covered: link, SEO, checkout content and security checks.

UptimeRobot is broad in uptime monitoring; monitordefend covers website health beyond uptime.

UptimeRobot has been around since 2010 and is often the first monitoring tool people install, mostly because of its free plan. Searching for “uptime robot” usually means one of three things: you want to know what it does, whether the free plan is enough, or how it compares with alternatives. This review answers all three. It covers monitor types, alerts, status pages, plans and limits, the strengths and weaknesses we see, who UptimeRobot suits best, and where a full website monitoring service such as monitordefend is the better fit. Pricing and plan details change regularly, so check UptimeRobot’s pricing page before buying.

What UptimeRobot is

UptimeRobot is a hosted uptime monitoring service. You create monitors for URLs, servers or tasks, choose an interval and alert contacts, and UptimeRobot checks them from its own infrastructure, confirms failures and notifies you when something goes down and when it recovers. It keeps response time charts, uptime percentages and an incident log, and you can publish the status of selected monitors on a public status page.

It is known for a large free plan and a simple, fast interface. Over the years it has added more monitor types, team features, incident management functions and integrations, moving from a pure “ping” service towards a broader availability monitoring platform.

Monitor types

HTTP(S) monitors request a URL and check the status code and response time. Keyword monitors additionally check whether a text appears or does not appear in the response, which catches error pages that still return 200. Ping monitors test whether a host answers ICMP, port monitors whether a service such as SMTP, FTP or a database port accepts connections. Heartbeat monitors work the other way round: your cron job or script calls a UptimeRobot URL, and you get an alert if the call does not arrive on time.

SSL and domain expiration monitoring warn before certificates and domain registrations run out. Depending on the plan, DNS, UDP, API and multi-location checks are available too. Together, these cover most availability questions for websites, servers and scheduled tasks.

Alerts and integrations

UptimeRobot alerts by email on every plan and offers mobile push notifications through its iOS and Android apps. SMS and voice calls work with credits, a number of which are included in paid plans. Integrations include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Telegram, Google Chat, webhooks, Zapier, PagerDuty and other incident tools; the free plan includes a limited number of integrations.

You can set alert delays and repeat notifications, assign different contacts per monitor and define maintenance windows during which no alerts are sent. For teams with on-call rotations, the integrations with incident platforms are the usual route.

Status pages

Status pages show the current state and history of selected monitors to customers or colleagues. The free plan includes one basic status page; paid plans add more pages, custom domains, white-label branding, password protection and announcements. For SaaS products and agencies that want to reduce support requests during outages, this is one of UptimeRobot’s most useful features.

Plans and pricing

The free plan includes 50 monitors with five-minute checks, one status page, a limited number of integrations and three months of data retention, and is positioned for hobby and non-profit projects. Solo is the entry-level paid plan for individuals with faster checks, more monitor types, custom-domain status pages and twelve months of history. Team adds 100 monitors, 30-second checks, team seats, more status pages and 24 months of data. Scale goes to 15-second checks and more monitors and seats, and Enterprise adds custom intervals, security reviews, SLAs and dedicated support.

Paid plans start in the single-digit to low double-digit range per month when billed annually and scale with monitors and seats. Prices differ by currency and billing period, so check the current pricing page.

Strengths

For “is it up?” across many URLs and servers at low cost, UptimeRobot is hard to beat.

Website health: 23 sitemap URLs not indexed

Website health: new script domain on /checkout

Weaknesses and limits

UptimeRobot answers availability questions. It does not crawl websites for broken links, compare sitemaps with Google’s index, watch search traffic, test whether a checkout still reaches the payment provider or look for signs of a hack such as new external scripts or spam. A site can be green in UptimeRobot and still lose visitors, rankings or sales.

Pricing is per monitor and seat, which is efficient for many simple checks but means each additional URL, keyword or certificate needs its own monitor. Free plan users get fewer alert channels and shorter history, and the free plan is not positioned for commercial use.

Who UptimeRobot is best for

Developers and freelancers who want free or cheap monitoring for side projects and client servers. SaaS teams that need port, API and heartbeat monitoring plus public status pages. Operations teams that route alerts into Slack or PagerDuty. Anyone who mainly needs to know whether a service responds, at short intervals and through many channels.

UptimeRobot vs. monitordefend

The two tools answer different questions. UptimeRobot asks whether a URL, port or job responds and offers many ways to be told. monitordefend asks whether a website is healthy: it checks uptime and response time every five minutes and, per website, also crawls for broken links, counts sitemap URLs, tracks Google indexing and search clicks via Search Console, checks the checkout page, measures hosting storage and looks for hack signals, with email alerts.

Check interval by plan15 s – 5 min
Free: 300 seconds Free Solo: 60 seconds Solo Team: 30 seconds Team Scale: 15 seconds Scale
Shorter intervals detect outages faster; five minutes suits most sites.

monitordefend has no free plan, no status pages, no SMS, voice or chat alerts and no ping, port or heartbeat monitors. UptimeRobot has no link, SEO, checkout or integrity checks. Some teams use both: UptimeRobot for servers, jobs and status pages, monitordefend for the health of their websites.

Alternatives to UptimeRobot

Pingdom, StatusCake and Better Stack are the closest commercial alternatives for uptime monitoring, with different strengths in synthetic checks, pricing and incident management. Uptime Kuma is a popular self-hosted open-source option. Site24x7 and Datadog belong to the broader observability platforms. Full website monitoring services such as monitordefend focus on website health beyond uptime. See the full list of UptimeRobot alternatives for details.

Our verdict

UptimeRobot is a reliable, affordable uptime monitor with an excellent free plan, flexible alerts and useful status pages. If you need availability monitoring for many endpoints, it is a sensible default. If your main risk is not a server going offline but a website that silently breaks, through dead links, lost indexing, a failing checkout or a hack, add or choose a tool that checks those as well.
